RAF / USAAF 'Grow' Anti-Flak Helmet

RAF / USAAF 'Grow' Anti-Flak Helmet

Code: SOLD-1231

SOLD
Manufactured by Wilkinson Sword. Designed by General Malcolm Grow who was surgeon general of the 8th AAF during WW2. Although intended initially for those aircrews in confined spaces such as ball and top turrets it was more widely issued within the AAF and also used by RAF crews flying American aircraft such as the B-17 and Hudson. Designed to fit over a C-type or A-11 helmet with a cut-out for the earpieces. Chromed leather over a steel helmet. Chamois linining and leather chinstrap with a pronged buckle fastening. There is some wear to the leather on exposed edges and a few nicks and areas of minor peeling etc. The lining has a few cuts/minor tears but remains fairly good and quite clean. Faint manufactuer marks to the rear and marked 'FRONT' on the opposite side. Surface corrosion on the buckle. Good strap. An extremely rare helmet to find. We have had only two or three of these in over 25 years. Please note that the flying helmet in the photos is for display purposes only and not included in the sale. Stock code H15339.
