British / US escape & evasion visor knife / compass

Code: S27531

SOLD

WW2 British & Commonwealth Forces 'Visor Knife' escape compass weapon in the form of a compact brass housing/sheath.  One side slides over the other revealing an escape and evasion razor blade.  Approximately 50 x 23 x 1.5mm and very similar in appearance to an American Forces 'dog-tag' (possibly used by US Forces too).  The housing is stamped 'VISOR KNIFE' and has a small hole at one end to allow for a lanyard, the blued steel blade was manufactured by J. Stead & Co. Ltd. of Sheffield, England.  It could be used as a weapon but has been magnetised so that when suspended by a thread in a glass of water it would act as a compass for escape and evasion purposes (we don't know if the blade still works as a compass but it will disrupt another compass so retains some magnetism).  The blade has surface corrosion, otherwise in very good condition.  Rare.  Stock code S27531.
