Stores Ref. 22c/875. Simple soft leather facemask with circular metal lens housings and basic elastic strap. Fitted with dark red filter lenses. These were provided to enable the crews of night flying aircraft to become 'dark adapted' before taking off and thereby to improve their night vision during the early stages of flight. Sadly the effects were instantly reversed once the wearer encountered bright light (exhaust flames, flak, searchlight beams etc). The goggles come with the original waxed wrapper and label and are unused old stock. Time in storage has led to some surface corrosion of the lens housings and strap clips. The lenses have some delamination and are VERY dark. The leather mask is in very good condition and has an inspection stamp. Stock code G15718.
