RAF MK.1A (M) Flying Helmet

Code: H20403

SOLD

Stores ref. 22c/1253087.  Size 4 Regular.  1970 dated.  Classic early bonedome worn in conjunction with the types F and G inner helmets that held the avionics and to which an oxygen mask could be fitted.  The MK.1A is a basic protective helmet in leather lined fibreglass.  It has a simple nylon webbing suspension system fitted inside to give a comfortable fit over the inner cloth helmet (not supplied). An anti-glare visor was fitted, comprising a centre rail attachment and mechanism and a replaceable tinted acrylic anti-glare screen.

This relatively late example of the type has been repainted in a drab green finish and is in fair to reasonable condition bar the usual scratches and chips. There is some distortion to the lower left edge adjacent to the strap connector (see photo 8).  The original green finish can be seen beneath in a couple of places where the top-coat is chipped.  The helmet has a reflective tape cross and is fitted with the visor track and visor attachment plate but no visor. The rubber edge roll is generally good but has split on the lower right side (as worn).  The lining of the helmet is fairly clean but has some abrasion damage in places.  Fitted with part of the chinstrap only.   Needs a little work but will make a great display piece.  Large size.  Stock code H20403.
