RAF MK.3B flying helmet

RAF MK.3B flying helmet

Code: H22210

SOLD

Stores reference 22c/2327.  Size medium.  The MK.3B is a variant of the MK.2A helmet with the same avionics system but fitted with the MK.2 Anti-Glare visor (centre rail mounting) used on the MK.1A flying helmet.  It was intended for use in fixed wing aircraft without ejector seats but provided with oxygen equipment (for masks type 'P' & 'Q' plus a modified version on the 'H').  The moulded glass fibre resinate shell is finished in its original white paint.  The internal padding is beige leather with a blue edging.  The shell is in reasonable  condition apart from some yellowing, the usual stress cracks, chips, small scrapes and scratches.  There is some paint loss on the rear right side as worn (see photos).  This example has an unusual modified paint finish at the rear of the helmet where a panel of what appears to be 'copper' paint has been applied.  We have no idea what the purpose of this would have been.  Internally the helmet is good but the foam rubber backing ond the brow padding is shedding as usual.   Retains excellent gel filled ear capusles.   Fitted with a standard short pigtail loom and NATO plug.  The tinted acrylic visor has only minor scratching and has a later cloth cover (22c/4051).  The helmet comes with its original blue fibre storage case complete with foam rubber insert & key.  The case is in sound condition though grubby and worn.  Also comes  with  the original instruction sheets for  fitting and maintenance  (4 sheets).  Considerably rarer than the later 3C.  Whilst it would benefit from a bit of clean up this is a good complete example and makes a super display piece.  Stock code H22210.
