Thermally Insulated Flying Suit, Jacket. Physically measures approximately 44” so should be suitable for around a 38/40” chest. This relatively early example is of 2-panel front and 4-panel rear construction (see photographs). Most of the leather is in reasonably good overall condition retaining much of the original chromed finish & flexibility. It has been treated with saddle soap in the past which has given a dull/flat finish, careful retreatment with a more suitable dressing might improve the appearance. The jacket appears to be quite robust but there is an old repaired 'V' cut on the back and another small nick. The left arm has further nicks and a couple of crudely repaired tears, apparantly undertaken by the original owner (see photographs). Unfortunately there is a large puncture/tear in the shoulder area of the right arm (photos 19-22). Most of the damage is adjacent to the seams and most of the shearling appears to be present. It could be repairable with care but a new panel may need inserting to provide a strong and effective repair. The collar is in good condition and is fitted with the original collar strap and rings. Complete with original belt and chain hanger. Good dense fur lining in the body of the jacket but there is minor loss on the collar and both cuffs and parts of the waist are rather worn. Original D-o-T zips throughout, the main has damage on the zip tape but operates without issue. All zips pullers have their original leather tabs. The jacket is perfectly displayable but would certainly benefit from some attention. It belonged to pilot Squadron Leader Thomas William Burrows who was born in 1916, flew with London University Air Squadron in 1938, trained at Cranwell, then to No.5 OTU and 116 Squadron . He flew many different aircraft but mostly did Radar calibration on Lysanders. According to his daughter he never wanted to fly again after the war and became a Senior Principle Scientific Officer at Microbiological Research Establishment at Porton Down.
