RAF Irvin flying jacket - very early example

RAF Irvin flying jacket - very early example

Code: J23059

SOLD

'Thermally Insulated Flying Suit, Jacket'.  Stores reference 22c/320.  Manufactured by Irvin Air Chute of Letchworth.  Size 4, labelled as a '40'.  Physically measures 44" (pit to pit) so should be suitable for around a 38-39" chest.  This example is of very early configuration with single panel front and single seam rear construction.  Interestingly it has never been fitted with the usual underarm ventilation eyelets - possibly a feature of some early examples.  The leather is in very good '+" to excellent overall condition retaining much of the original chromed finish and flexibility.  There is some light wear, abrasion and loss of chroming in places - most notable on the sleeves.  Excellent short dense fur lining and collar facing.  Both cuffs and waist retain good fur.  The main zip appears to be an old replacement but both cuff zips are original to the jacket.  The belt is complete and in good condition but has some glue residue where stitched on one side - see photograph.  The collar strap has been modified with the rings being removed in favour of a single pronged buckle.  Also has the original 'Irvinsuit' label which has a 1935 contract date making this a very nice early production jacket.  Further photographs available on request.  Stock code J23059.
Approximate measurements : pit to pit 22", pit to cuff 21", Collar seam to waist 23". All taken with jacket laid flat and zipped.
