RAF Irvin flying jacket, S8

RAF Irvin flying jacket, S8

Code: J22953

SOLD

Thermally Insulated Flying Suit, Jacket.  Stores reference 22c/324, size 8 (Ht. 6'2"-6'4", Br. 42"-44" Wt. 38/40").  Physically measures approximately 50” so should be suitable for around a 44-46” chest.  This example is of four-panel front and rear construction.  The appearance is excellent and the leather is in very good overall condition retaining virtually all of the original chromed finish and flexibility.  There is only minor abrasion  and no significant damage or repairs.  The jacket has a tiny hole adjacent to a seam on the left arm and another small hole close to that one.  The upper left rear panel is rather creased and the top section of this feels a bit thin and potentially weak.  Remaining panels and binding seams appear to be strong.   Both sleeves have been shortened and the cuffs bound in leather, the sleeve zips have been reduced in length to match.  It is worth mentioning that Irvins do tend to have very long sleeves.  I am 6'2" and of slim build with long arms and the sleeves on this jacket are about right for me even though reduced in length!   Very good dense medium length fur lining with most of the trim still remaining at the waist. The jacket retains original 'Lightning' brand zips at the front and cuffs (right one needs the slider re-mounting).  Both sleeve zips have original leather puller tags. The belt is complete and in good condition. This example has the orginal Air Ministry label, chain hanger, collar strap / rings and eyelets (one broken) to the rear of the collar for the elastic 'collar strap' (not present).  This is the largest size manufactured.  They do not come any bigger!  Strips of original Irvin fleece will be supplied to enable re-trimming of the cuffs and improve the appearance but this is still a very good looking jacket in a rare large size.   Stock code J22953.

Approximate measurements : chest/pit to pit 25", underarm to cuff 20", underarm centre-seam to cuff 21.5", neck seam to waist 27".
