RAF Irvin flying jacket, wired
Electrically Wired Thermally Insulated Flying Suit, Jacket. Physically measures approximately 50” so should be suitable for around a 44 - 46” chest. Classic early wired example with single panel fronts and just one centre seam on the back of the jacket. Fitted with an integral wiring loom within leather channels sewn along each sleeve and across the lower back to enable the use of R.A.E. heated gloves. A short umbilical cord connected the jacket to matching trousers via a 2-pin socket. Another umbilical connected the wearer to the aircraft via a larger alloy 3-pin plug (5c/2202). The leather is in very good '+' to excellent overall condition retaining strength and much of the original chromed finish and flexibility. There are small areas of abrasion/wear and a small glued (?) surface patch but the general appearance of the jacket is excellent. It has clearly been dressed recently (probably with Pecard) and is slightly tacky - notably the umbilicals but this can be wiped off and will soak in/dry off anyway. All seams appear good and tight. The The wiring loom is still in place (most wired jackets have had the wiring stripped out) and has both 2-pin plugs and RAE 'posts' in place. The umbilicals are also present but we believe these have been reinstated using original plugs and leather. Very good short dense fur typical of early war jackets. The waist and cuff fur is also very good but minor re-trimming has been done at some point. The jacket retains original D-o-T zips, all with their original leather puller tags. The belt is complete and in good condition and the collar is fitted with fastening strap/rings and has eyelets to the rear for the elastic 'collar strap' (not present). Overall this is a lovely example of these rare wired jackets in an unusally large size. Further photographs available on request.
Approximate measurements : pit to pit 25", pit to cuff 23.5", collar seam to waist 25". All taken with jacket laid flat and zipped.
