RAF 1951 pattern flying suit/scarf

RAF 1951 pattern flying suit/scarf

Code: S27460

SOLD

'Overalls, Flying, Lightweight - 1951 Pattern'.  Stores reference 22c/1140.  Size 4 (Height 5'4" - 5'7", Breast 37" - 41").  This was the first of the 'modern' style postwar general-purpose flying suits, pre-dating the Mk.1 suit and designed to replace the Lightweight Flying Overall (Beadon suit).  It was manufactured in blue-grey windproof gabardine 'Ventile' and used rubber buttons throughout rather than zip fasteners.  Fitted with flapped patch breast pockets and various leg pockets.  Adjustable buttoned tabs are fitted at the ankles with press stud adjustment at the cuffs.  The waistbelt is channelled through the suit to prevent it from catching on the aircraft during use.  Condition is generally very good, the suit retains reasonably strong colour* and only has light soiling and marks.  There are some patched/repaired small holes above the right breast pocket (as worn) and most of the rubber buttons are in quite good order bar some colour variation and small cracks.  One of the front buttons is absent.  With War Department broad arrow marked label.  The suit also retains its original grey rayon scarf that has been stitched in place at the neck.  Evidence of patch removal at the shoulder.  These early post-war/jet-age suits are becoming increasingly sought after and difficult to find.  Stock code S27460.

*The suit appears lighter from the waist down in the photos - this is due to the lighting.  The colour is actually quite even throughout.
