RAF 1951 pattern ventile flying suit

RAF 1951 pattern ventile flying suit

Code: S23657

SOLD

'Overalls, Flying, Lightweight - 1951 Pattern'. Stores reference 22c/1141.  Size 5 (Ht. 5'8" - 5'11", Br. 34 - 37"). This was the first of the 'modern' style postwar general purpose flying suits, predating the Mk.1 suit and designed to replace the Lightweight Flying Overall (Beadon suit). It was manufactured in blue-grey windproof gabardine 'Ventile' and used rubber buttons throughout rather than zip fasteners. Fitted with flapped patch breast pockets and various leg pockets. Adjustable buttoned tabs are fitted at the ankles with press stud adjustment at the cuffs. The waistbelt is channelled through the suit to prevent it catching on the aircraft during use. Condition is good. The suit retains reasonably strong colour but is a bit soiled with spot marks/stains and a small tear above the lower pocket on the left leg.  A printed Royal Aircraft Establishment patch is sewn to the right shoulder.  These early post-war/jet-age suits are becoming increasingly sought after and difficult to find. Named to the original owner.  Stock code S23657.
