Royal Flying Corps box

Code: M26957

SOLD

High quality solid mahogany (?) box approximately 27 x 11.5 x 11cm with moulded plinth and integral feet and a brass/bronze plaque affixed to the hinged lid.  The plaque is approximately 22 x 6.5cm with a large RFC pilot wing at the centre and wording 'Per Ardua As Astra' in a scroll beneath.  On the left of the plaque is a circular monogram with the letters 'IB' intertwined within a laurel wreath.  A similar monogram on the right has the intertwined letters 'ES'.  Both monograms are surrounded with thistle leaves/flowers.  The inside of the box and lid is lined with padded pleated pale blue silk.  Condition is generally good and the box has a very pleasing rich wax polished finish.  There are a few minor knocks externally and the position of one of the hinges has been changed at some point due to some damage.  The lining is faded and worn as shown.  A lovely antique piece, probably originally intended as a jewellery box.  It would make a lovely display with other WW1 RFC items.  Stock code M26957.
