Stores reference 22c/51. Size 2. Chestnut brown leather helmet with a chamois lining. Wide leather chin strap with single pronged buckle fastening. Central rear goggle strap. This example was originally modified for use with Gosport earpeices and has holes pierced in the sides and stitch marks where chamois lined earflaps were fitted. The leather is a little dry but remains good and supple with much of the original chromed finish. The chinstrap is strong although it has lost two of the hole eyelets. The leather covered buckle has surface wear but is quite good and the lining is undamaged with average even soiling. There is a faded label with the number '2' stamped below. The 1930 pattern helmet replaced the MK.1 used by the RFC during the Great War and was the forerunner of the type B introduced in 1935. A good '+' used example of this early RAF helmet.
