RFC cap type / RAF Mk.1 flying helmet

Code: H22056

SOLD

Tan chromed leather helmet with fur trimmed fold-back peak, press studded ear flaps for use with Gosport communication earpieces/tubes and cylindrical wind deflectors.  This example also has an extended rear neck protector.  Blanket lined in the crown with a fur lining in the lower section.  This particular type of helmet was introduced around 1914 and later re-designated the 'Flying Helmet, MK.1, 22c/12'.  The leather is very supple and generally sound but the surface has lost most of the chromed finish and has surface abrasion/minor lifting.  A careful application of a light leather dressing would probably improve the appearance but we will leave that decision to the buyer.  It retains the original earflaps and wind deflectors along with the simple strap and leather covered single pronged buckle  - all in similar condition to the rest of the helmet.  The blanket lining is in good condition but the fur trim is worn on the peak and neck flap areas in particular.  No label or markings but typical of this pattern and those seen in period photos.  Reasonably good overall condition and a nice display piece.  Stock code H22056.
