WW1 photograph postcard - RFC airmen

Photographic postcard showing a large group of RFC airmen in maternity jackets and field service caps.  The majority are also carrying swagger canes.  It is interesting to note that one airman is black. This was very unusual at the time as the British Armed Forces maintained a ‘colour ban’ and very few African-Caribbean or Asian volunteers were accepted into the ranks.  As the forces expanded, and casualties rose, this restriction was relaxed, and an unknown number of Black personnel joined the Royal Flying Corps.  A little dog-eared and creased with some paper loss in the upper right corner.  Stock code P22873-173.
