Ex London Underground fire bucket with shrapnel

Ex London Underground fire bucket with shrapnel

Code: M27589

SOLD

Fabulous red painted riveted steel bucket, approximately 30cm tall (54cm with the folding wrought iron handle raised), 25cm diameter top and 17cm diameter base.  We were told that this was found in the home of a gentleman who worked on the London Underground during the war, and what makes this even more interesting is the damage caused to the bucket during an air raid in the blitz.  There are three jagged pieces of shrapnel that have pierced the steel and are actually embedded into the side of the bucket.  There are also some dents but much of the original red paint remains along with a lovely George VI cypher and words 'FIRE WATER'.  An impressive and unique piece.  Note that the shrapnel pieces have been secured in place with some mortar or other compound to prevent loss - see photographs.
