Luftwaffe Ruckenfallschirm, Model RH 12B (Fl. 30245). Manufactured by By Schroeder & Co., Berlin-Neukölln. Webbing harness with a quick release (QR) box that the Germans copied from the RAF, adding a safety 'key' to prevent accidental depression and potential premature release. There is also a large waistbelt incorporating the rip-cord release 'D' ring. The compact khaki coloured pack fitted into a painted aluminium tray that was shaped to rest against the airman's back. This early model pack is fastened by means of a type of oversized zip held together using a long metal locking pin (later model packs fastened by means of a series of fabric loops in place of the zip). It has the correct QR box with engraved German text reading 'To Release harness : Turn and push'. Text on the side of the box reads 'GESICHERT' (Safe) and 'ENSICHER' (unlocked). A wide canvas webbing waistbelt carries both the QR box and ripcord housing. All of the QR box plates have Luftwaffe 'FL 30232-1' code markings.
The harness is in very good used condition with relatively light soiling, it is labelled but the ink has faded making it difficult to read. The QR box is fully functioning and the rip cord housing, rip cord and handle are all present although the latter has a few small holes in the canvas - see photographs. The pack is in excellent clean condition complete with large original linen label showing manufacturer's details, model and reference numbers - Gerat : Ruckenfallschirm, Bauart : Autoflug - Berlin, Gerate Nummer : 10 - 9. C (Rufa 12 B), Anforderzeichen FL 30245, Hersteller : Schroeder & Co., Berlin-Neukölln.' It also has other faint inspection/date (?) stamps. The pack retains excellent bungee straps and whilst the attachment rings are present within the pack there is no canopy and the pack has been padded for the photographs to enhance the appearance and give the appropriate shape. The aluminium tray is in very good undamaged condition, free from any major dents and retains most of the original drab green/brown paint finish. The original thin backpad remains in place, attached via press studs to the back of the tray.
This type of parachute was worn in aircraft having a recess in the back of the seats including fighters and bombers. It is extremely difficult to find Luftwaffe parachute kit and this is in good used condition. Buy it while you can. A superb display piece. Stock code S22943.
