Early Australian C-type variant flying helmet

Code: H26344

SOLD

Manufactured by Stagg in Australia.  Size 7.  Brown chromed leather flying helmet with buckled chinstrap and single buckled goggle strap at the rear.  The basic pattern of the helmet is based on a standard RAF C-type but this example is fitted with press studded earflaps in place of rubber receiver carriers.  The suede helmet lining is also very similar to a standard C-type.  The leather is in excellent supple condition, both earpieces are very good and both sets of press studs are marked 'STAGG MELB AUS'.  The helmet lining has average soiling and there is some loss of backing on the chinstrap.  A small circular size label is afixed inside.  The helmet is fitted with an excellent set of Air Ministry marked bakelite Gosport communication earpieces, stores reference 6F/154, and tubes, stores reference 6F/162.  A lovely helmet.  The Australian War Memorial musuem has a similar (tattier) example within its collection.  They suggest that these helmets were worn by RAAF aircrew in Malaya circa 1941-42.  Stock code H26344.
