Unlined pale green cotton mask/hood for use with a flying helmet and oxygen mask. Almost certainly manufactured by Windak. In use this was held to the early pattern C-type flying helmet using the front goggle straps and press studs to the rear. Fitted with an Air Ministry stamped zip fastener to one side for a snug fit and has a hole at the front to allow an oxygen tube to pass through. Pictured in Mick Prodger`s Vintage Headgear book, p.205. Intended for use by rear gunners in particular although these appear to have seen limited service use. This rare example has been modified with small sections of elasticated webbing and a clasp, presumably to increase the tension around the head when worn.
