RAF / RN FAA C-type flying helmet, early pattern, modified

Unknown size.  A very intriguing helmet that started out as an early externally wired FAA C-type and would/should have been fitted with zipped earpieces.  Standard FAA receiver carriers are fitted with provision for use with Gosport earpieces/tubes but there are no zipped leather earpieces.  Instead foam rubber cushions have been stitched in place around the carriers, with the centres of the cushions removed to allow access to the receivers.  Note how the small straps above the earpieces have also been carefully stitched to the cushion and the helmet modified to take an 'internal' wiring loom.  Note also that both forward goggle straps and corresponding studs have been carefully removed, and the three deliberate holes made at the centre of the forehead panel.  This suggests a bracket to secure goggles.  The leather is in good '+' to very good overall condition remaining supple with just minor scuffing and wear.  This example has 3 press studs fitted, making it suitable for the E series and G-type oxygen mask but an oxygen mask clip has been fitted suggesting use with the latter.   The remaining straps are good although one has a replaced press stud.  Excellent Bennett buckle and chinstrap, the latter with metal end tip.  Both cushions retain some flexibility but are cracking with some damage and loss.  The chamois lining has average soiling with more rubbing on the earpieces and the back of the neck.  Fitted with a dark tan coloured instrument cord (loom), early brown cased type 119 bell jackplug (stores reference 10H/10991) and matched type 32 receivers (stores reference 10A/13466).  A rare and unusual modified helmet.  Stock code H24351.
