Stores Ref. 6D/645. Size medium. The rubber is in very good supple condition, quite clean and the overall shape is excellent without any serious cracking. The nosewire lugs are complete and although close-up photos show crazing, are actually pretty good as are the harness retention lugs. There is no cracking or damage around the anti-suffocation valve or microphone retention wire. Minor deterioration is visible at the edge of the facepiece adjacent to the left nosewire lug/nose area - see photos. The harness retains some colour and elasticity. Lined with brown suede. This is complete, reasonably clean and in good condition suggesting relatively light use. The mask is fitted with an excellent type 25 microphone, mid tan coloured 'external' wiring loom complete with early brown cased jackplug and matched Air Ministry 10A/13466 receivers. Marked inside with the initials of the original owner W/O (later Fl. Lt.) John ' Hamish' Metcalf RAFVR (143895) - also known as Jack Metcalf. He flew as an instructor completing a very large number of flying hours and on several occasions, made successful emergency landings under conditions of bad weather and unserviceability of aircraft. In these trying circumstances he displayed great coolness, good judgement and gallantry. For this he was awarded the AFC. The mask comes with some photocopied pages from the London Gazette.
