USAAF oxygen mask maintenance kit

USAAF oxygen mask maintenance kit

Code: O27209

RESERVED

'Kit, Oxygen Mask, Maintenance, Type Z-1'.  Circa 1944, this olive drab painted steel bound solid wooden case measures approximately 47 x 33 x 15cm.  It has twin clasp closures and a leather carrying handle.  Sectioned inside with wooden dividers that create compartments for boxes used to contain tools and spare parts necessary for the maintenance of A-8B, A-10 and A-14 oxygen masks.  One of the boxes remains, having a hinged lid with a leather tab for opening and lifting from the case.  The case is in very good solid condition although there are some screw holes and minor damage near the handle where a non-original clasp had been added (now removed).  Internally it's a bit soiled but otherwise in very good original condition.  Sadly there are no contents remaining!  A lovely rare piece of kit that would have been found in very small numbers on every air base.  Stencilled with the owner's name D.J. Ball, service number 34782175. David J Ball, born in 1921, enlisted in Florida on 16th April 1943.  Further research needed but perhaps he served with the 8th or 9th AAF as the case was found in England.  It makes an excellent display piece.  Stock code O27209.
