USAAF M-3 shoulder holster

USAAF M-3 shoulder holster

Code: M21879

SOLD

Holster, Pistol, M3, By Boyt. For use with the M1911 .45 automatic pistol. Introduced in 1942 for use by pilots unable to wear a hip holster due to the confines of a cramped cockpit and intended (with gun) for self defence purposes in the event of having to bail out or finding themselves in enemy territory. Produced in tan leather with adjustable shoulder strap. Lower press studded strap for securing to a waist belt and a gun retainer strap with 'lift-the-dot' fastening. 'U.S' embossed. These were also used by US Paratroops. This example has had the shoulder strap removed. Overall condition is reasonable.  The leather is sound, strong and has quite a dark patina. There is surface cracking on the 'leading edge' of the holster and straps - see photographs.  Some verdigris deposits/surface corrosion on metal studs and 'D' ring.  Embossed to rear 'U.S. BOYT 43' . These were the favoured choice of many airmen. Stock code M21879.
