Flyer's Helmet, M3. Essentially a modified M1 steel helmet (designed for ground troops) without a separate liner. An adjustable webbing suspension system was attached directly to the inside of the shell which was cut away at the sides to provide clearance for the flying helmet receivers. Hinged earflaps provided protection in these areas. Dark olive drab painted and 'flocked' finish - a coating similar to cotton lint which helped to prevent the wearer's skin from freezing to the metal at high altitudes where temperatures are extremely low. It is fitted with an adjustable webbing chin strap with press stud fastening. Overall condition is very good but there is surface corrosion in places - most notably to the inside of the hinged flaps. These were worn over the standard issue flying helmets and were used mainly between late 1943 and early 1945. Displays very well. Stock code H19048.
