RAF Station 'Scramble' Bell - 1940

Large nickel plated bronze RAF station bell with classic 'crown' top. This is the larger of the two sizes produced, measuring approximately 33cm in height (not including top screw eye bracket or protruding clapper) and 33cm diameter. Stamped 'A.T.W' and with War Department broad arrow on the crown top and engraved to the side with King's crown A.M. marks and 1940 date. This example has an screw eye at the top for hanging the bell (rarely found) and is fitted with the often missing original clapper, complete with plaited rope. The bell is in totally original unrestored/untouched condition. It has minor 'dings' and surface wear where it has been struck over the years and would benefit from a good clean and polish. Many of these bells were painted and this does have small remnants of paint in some areas. The inside of the bell and clapper have verdigris/grime and surface corrosion respectively - all consumate with age. The rope 'tail' is a little tatty in places. Contrary to popular belief each station had more than one bell and they were not used exclusively to 'scramble' aircraft but due to various original 1940 Pathe newsreels these have become iconic symbols of the Battle of Britain and fighter pilots racing to their waiting aircraft. A must for every serious collector, these are increasingly difficult to find now. A superb, impressive and imposing display piece.
