U.S.A.A.F. 8th AAF Base Depot Sign

SOLD

Code: SOLD-964

Cast alloy door (?) sign for Base Air Depot No.1. Made in 5 sections - 2 wings, star, 'Base Air Depot' banner and a B-17 aircraft. Each wing measures approx. 20cm (span) and the star is 8cm across. Would probably have been painted originally and each section screwed to a a sign or door. R.A.F. Burtonwood (Cheshire) was used by the USAAF from June 1942 until the end of the war as Base Air Depot 1 (BAD 1). By December 1943 it had become the centre for overhaul and repair of all AAF radial engined aircraft. RAF Burtonwood was the largest airfield within Europe during WW2 with both the longest runway and highest number of AAF personnel on site - responsible for the support of the 8th, 9th and ultimately the 12th and 15th AAF. Unique item in very good condition. Would make a superb display item. Stock code 14779.
