USAAF AN6553 / AN-J-4 Flying Jacket

SOLD

Code: SOLD-613

@APOS@Jackets Winter Flying AN6553/AN-J4@APOS@. By Arnoff Shoe Co. Inc. Size 38R. Introduced in 1943 & produced in 3/4@SPEACH@ seal brown shearling it had a full length front zip and two lower patch pockets (flapped). Like the B-3, the sleeves are strengthened with an extra panel of hide on the outer sides. Much of the leather is in sound condition, quite strong and supple but suffering from the usual crazing and loss of finish associated with AAF shearling. This is particularly noticeable on the backs of the arms, shoulders and lower back where the leather now appears more like suede than the original lacquered polyacrylate dyed finish. There are some areas of damage - notably to the right shoulder as worn (see photo) where there is a 4 - 5cm tear and weakening of surrounding leather. In addition there is a smaller tear to the top of the right front panel (1 - 2cm) and some tears within the left side panel (see photo). The zip fastener is broken and lacks the slider. The jacket retains the original leather hanger, label, pockets and side adjustment straps. The fur lining is in excellent condition as is the collar (bar small hole to top of rear centre seam area) which retains the strap/snaps. The Knitted wristlets inside the cuffs appear good and moth free. Nice faded/cracked colour AAF decal to the left shoulder. Not without problems but still a displayable jacket. A careful application of leather dressing would probably improve the appearance. Careful repairs/patching and zip replacement are also an option. Stock code J16008.
