French L'Armee de L'Air Pilot's Dress Tunic

By Raoul Dabonneville, Master Tailor. Dark (Louise) blue tunic and trousers for an @APOS@Officiers Superieurs@APOS@ (Senior Officer). This example has gold embroidered @APOS@passants@APOS@ on the shoulders and cuff rank for a Colonel. It is has a bullion @APOS@aircrew@APOS@ wing sewn over the right breast pocket and comes with a silver gilt pilot badge (currently pinned in place). This has twin lugs to the rear for pin fastening although it was not uncommon for them to be sewn in place. The jacket has cotton loops for hanging medals and ribbons for the Legion of Honour, 39-45 War Cross, Overseas Cross, Combatants Cross, Aeronautics medal, Liberation medal, War Commemorative medal, Italian Campaign medal, Overseas and Indo-China medal. The overall appearance of the tunic is good. There is some marking and also a fray hole in the collar (see photo). Some of the button holes are a little ragged and the cuff rank is part unstitched in places. There is a small moth hole at the edge of the aircrew badge. The lining is generally good although one of the sleeve linings is part unstitched. One shoulder button is missing. The trousers have a button fly and are in very good used condition. Belonged to Jean Magnan, 49127. His 1940 period greatcoat and cap are also listed on the website. This is the type of uniform worn by all French Air Force officers at the beginning of WW2. Following the fall of France they often wore RAF uniforms saving their @APOS@French Blues@APOS@ for formal dress. An extremely rare find. Stock code U16696.
