SOLD

Code: SOLD-443

Unknown size/maker. Service dress cap named to J McGibbon. James McGibbon was born on 14th February 1915 to James McGibbon C.M.G. (Snr.) & Mrs McGibbon of Shandon, Scotland. He was a graduate of Glasgow University (BSc. 1936). McGibbon attained the rank of Pilot Officer (24.8.40) and joined 615 (County of Surrey) Squadron at Prestwick, Ayrshire on September 23rd 1940. 615 had taken part in the early stages of the Battle and moved North to rest and re-requip. During a routine practice flight on 29th McGibbon dived into the ground from 7000@APOS@ in his Hurricane (V7312). The cause of the crash is unknown, McGibbon, aged just 24, was killed instantly and his aircraft written off. He is buried at Faslane cemetery, Rhu, Dunbartonshire. The cap is in reasonable condition. There is some fading and soiling and the crown has very light moth trailing and one small hole. There is also some moth damage under the mohair band around the cap. The badge is good used condition but the leather cap strap has partially come apart and needs a couple of stitches. The lining is sound but soiled and the inner leather band is partially unstitched/detached. To the centre of the lining is a woven name tape/label that reads @APOS@J McGIBBON@APOS@. Reasonable, well used condition.
