Rare Air Ministry Escape Map - Danzig

Sheet N.34 /4 1st Edition. 1 : 500, 000 - Europe (AIR). 1938. Air Ministry marked. Approx. 31 x 30cms. This is a scaled down version of a standard flight map printed in full colour on fine tissue paper manufactured from Japanese Mulberry leaf paper pulp. The wartime escape and evasion guru Clayton Hutton @APOS@invented@APOS@ these maps that could be printed onto this non-rustling paper that was strong even when wet. However, this map is much smaller than most escape maps found and is of a smaller area. These were carried by airman in order to help them evade capture and return to allied held territory or neutral countries. This map was sent into Stalag Luft III POW camp, famous for the @APOS@Great Escape@APOS@ and @APOS@Wooden Horse@APOS@ escape. Indeed, Oliver Philpott, one of the wooden horse escapers fled to Danzig where a Swedish shipping was often found. He escaped to neutral Sweden on one of these ships. Other escapers from Stalag Luft III and Colditz also headed for Danzig. The map is folded/creased and does have some small tears and damage but is in reasonably good used condition overall.
