RAF Comforts Committee Doll

SOLD

Code: M19870

Manufactured by Norah Wellings who was a chief doll designer for Chad Valley prior to establishing her own company.  This "Harry the Hawk" R.A.F. mascot doll was created to raise funds during the war for the Royal Air Force Comforts Committee with a percentage of the sale donated to the fund.  Harry is modelled as an airman/pilot and stands approximately 18cm / 7" tall.  He is kitted out in a Sidcot style flying suit complete with fur collar, flying helmet, boots, gloves and parachute harness with pack and parachute canopy.  The doll is soft bodied with a hard stuffed/moulded fabric face with hand painted features.  The sidcot suit is made in cotton with felt pockets.  The helmet, harness, pack parachute and gloves are all felt while the boots are in black velvet. There is a woven label on the left foot 'Made in England by Norah Wellings' and another to the back of the collar 'Royal Air Force Comforts Fund U.K.  Regd. Design No. 837533".

Overall condition is excellent.  There is a small puncture in the fabric of the face adjacent to the right eye where the stuffing is buldging slightly.  This could possibly be repaired or improved with care.  Other than that and a tiny hole in one arm (see photos) the doll is remarkably clean and damage free.  The felt goggles are missing but the parachute canopy remains in place.  These dolls are highly sought after not only by doll collectors but also 'Home Front'  and RAF collectors too.  A charming wartime momento.  Stock code M19870.
