RAF MK.1 Flying Helmet

SOLD

Code: H20605

Stores reference 22C/1520.  Size 2 Broad.  By Helmets Ltd. of Wheathampstead.  1955 dated.  The very first post WW2 bonedome worn in conjuction with the type F & G inner helmet that held the avionics and to which an oxygen mask could be fitted.  The MK.1 is a basic protective helmet in leather lined fibreglass.  It has a simple nylon webbing suspension system fitted inside to give a comfortable fit over the inner cloth helmet (not supplied).  These early variants were worn with the MK.VIII goggles and not fitted with an anti-glare visor.  They lack the distinctive central ridge of the later MK.1A to which a visor track was fitted.  Original silver paint finish.  The helmet has the usual scratches and chips, notably to each side where the goggle strap fittings would have rubbed.  The lining is a bit grubby but the rubber edge roll is good. The chinstrap is complete with velveteen pad and in reasonable condition.  The helmet would benefit from some cosmetic improvements but is in reasonably good used condition overall.  These early MK.1s were produced for a very short period making them extremely rare and sought after today. Stock code H20605.
