USAAF M-3 Anti-Flak Helmet

SOLD

Code: H21102

Flyer's Helmet, M3. Essentially a modified M1 steel helmet (designed for ground troops) without a separate liner. An adjustable webbing suspension system was attached directly to the inside of the shell which was cut away at the sides to provide clearance for the flying helmet receivers. Hinged earflaps provided protection in these areas. Dark olive drab painted and 'flocked' finish - a coating similar to cotton lint which helped to prevent the wearer's skin from freezing to the metal at high altitudes where temperatures are extremely low. It is fitted with an adjustable webbing chin strap with press stud fastening. Overall condition is reasonable.  The shell is undamaged and retains much of the flock but there is surface corrosion in places. Two red stripes have been crudely painted from front to back and we believe these to be period.  The inside of the helmet also has surface corrosion.  This could be cleaned up by the buyer if thought necessary.  The webbing suspension is complete though stained and the points at which it attaches to the shell are also corroded.  The webbing chinstrap is complete but shows wear/fraying and again, the metal components have corrosion. These were worn over the standard issue flying helmets and were used mainly between late 1943 and early 1945. Displays well. Stock code H21102.
