RAF station 'scramble' bell

SOLD

Code: M20674

Dimensions:

W: 28cm (11")H: 30cm (11.8")D: 28cm (11")

Large nickel plated bronze RAF station bell with classic 'crown' top. This is the smaller of the two sizes produced, measuring approximately 30cm in height (not including protruding clapper when fitted) and 28cm diameter. Stamped 'T.W' with War Department broad arrow on the crown top and engraved to the side with King's crown A.M. marks and 1942 date. This example is complete with the original clapper (often missing), painted red with white painted plaited rope 'handle'.  It is also painted red inside and the entire bell may well have been this colour at some point.  Many saw use as fire bells in addition to the more dramatic use to 'Scramble' pilots to their aircraft. Other than giving it a quick clean we have left the bell in original condition. It has relatively minor 'dings', scratches and surface wear where it has been struck over the years but has a pleasing overall patina commensurate with age.  We prefer this but it could probably be polished to a shinier finish if desired. Contrary to popular belief each station had more than one bell.  A must for every serious collector, these are increasingly difficult to find now. A superb, impressive and imposing display piece. Extremely heavy at around 20kg unpacked - postage is given as a guide only and may require adjustment. As with everything we list this is guaranteed original and not one of the copies that are now surfacing. Please enquire if you need more information. Stock code M20426.
