RAF 1930 pattern flying helmet

SOLD

Code: H22579

By H Bednall Ltd.  Stores reference 22c/51.   Size 2, 67/8 - 71/8.  1933 dated.  Chestnut brown leather helmet with a chamois lining.  Wide leather chin strap with single pronged buckle fastening.  Central rear goggle strap.  This example is 'as issued'  for use without radio equipment or Gosport earpieces.  Many of these helmets were modified for such use with holes pierced in the sides and the fitting of chamois lined earflaps, stores reference 22c/57.  The leather is in very good supple condition retaining much of the original chromed finish.  There is light rubbing on the crown and other exposed seams but there are no serious issues.  The chinstrap is strong  although a bit worn and it has lost two of the hole eyelets.  The leather covered buckle has surface wear but is generally quite good and the lining is undamaged with average even soiling.  There is a faded label with manufacturer's details, size and date details.  Below this is an Air Ministry King's crown ink stamp.  The 1930 pattern helmet replaced the MK.1 used by the RFC during the Great War and is also the forerunner of the type B introduced in 1935.  A good '+' to very good used example of this early RAF helmet.  Stock code H22579.
