RAF Airship / ASR Launch clock

SOLD

Code: C22620

Dimensions:

W: 23cm (9.1")H: 23cm (9.1")D: 9cm (3.5")

Solid brass bulkhead type clock approximately 23cm/9" diameter x 9cm/3.5" deep.   Heavy cast brass bezel with thick bevelled glass.  20cm/8" cream painted dial with Roman numerals and black hands.  Fitted with a Smiths 'Astral' 8-day platform escapement movement engraved with Air Ministry King's crown marks and 1942 date.   The case shows some use and wear but has a lovely unpolished patina.  The bezel is equally good with strong original hinge and excellent glass.  The dial has some soiling and wear but is generally in very good condition with no rust or significant paint loss.  The movement is quite clean and the clock appears to run well and keep good time.  In his book on RAF clocks Lt. Col. Bob Gardner suggests that the RAF musuem have one of these clocks and it appears in their inventory as an Airship clock.  I believe that this type of clock could also have seen use on RAF high speed Air Sea Rescue launches.  A lovely clock.  Stock code C22620.
