RAF station 'Scramble' bell - 1940

Stores reference 21C/1434.  Large non ferrous bronze-nickel RAF station bell with classic 'crown' top. This is the smaller of the two sizes produced, measuring approximately 30cm in height (not including protruding clapper when fitted) and 28cm diameter. Stamped 'A.T.W' with War Department broad arrow on the crown top and engraved to the side with King's crown A.M. marks and all important 1940 date. This example is complete with the often missing original bi-metal clapper.  It is undamaged but has relatively minor 'dings', scratches and surface wear/pitting where it has been struck over the years.  With effort all of these bells can be cleaned and polished to a hight shine finish if required. Note that the clapper appears to have had some rust treatment applied to the shaft.  Contrary to popular belief each station had more than one bell.  They were not used exclusively to 'scramble' aircraft but due to various original 1940 Pathe newsreels these have become iconic symbols of the Battle of Britain and fighter pilots racing to their waiting aircraft.  A must for every serious collector, these are increasingly difficult to find now.  A superb, impressive and imposing display piece.
