RAF Irvin flying jacket, size 8

SOLD

Code: J24449

Thermally Insulated Flying Suit, Jacket.  Stores reference 22c/324, size 8 (Ht. 6'2"-6'4", Br. 42"-44" Wt. 38/40").  Physically measures approximately 48” so should be suitable for around a 44” chest.  This example is of four-panel front and rear construction.  The appearance is generally good '+' and much of the leather retains its original chromed finish.  However, it was very dry and the arms in particular rather 'stiff'. Although it has now been treated, the leather would probably benefit from another application  to feed and make it more supple.  Note the wear and abrasion on the sleeves and some thinning around the shoulders and be aware that some of the stitching on the binding tapes has failed (see photograph of the rear of the collar as an extreme example).  This is probably as a result of drying out  but if you are  intending to wear the jacket it would certainly require some re-stitching to rectify this.  That said there is no significant damage or repairwork. Very good dense medium length fur lining with a shorter pile on the collar. Most of the trim still remains at the waist but there is more loss on the right cuff (see photograph). The jacket retains an original 'D-o-T' main zip and 'Lightning' sleeve zips - all with leather puller tags.  With belt, lovely large original Air Ministry label, chain hanger, collar strap / rings and eyelets to the rear of the collar for the elastic 'collar strap' (not present).  This is the largest size manufactured.  They do not come any bigger!  Purchased directly from the son of the original wartime pilot.   Stock code J24449.

Approximate measurements : chest/pit to pit 23", underarm to cuff 24", underarm centre-seam to cuff 21.5", neck seam to waist 27".
