RAF Mk.3B flying helmet

SOLD

Code: H24978

Stores reference 22c/2327.  Unknown size (label absent).  The MK.3B is a variant of the MK.2A helmet with the same avionics system but fitted with the MK.2 Anti-Glare visor (centre rail mounting) used on the MK.1A flying helmet.  It was intended for use in fixed wing aircraft without ejector seats but provided with oxygen equipment (for masks type 'P' & 'Q' plus a modified version on the 'H').  The moulded glass fibre resinate shell is finished in its original white paint.  The internal padding is beige leather with a green/blue edging.  The shell is in good to very good condition apart from some yellowing, relatively minor stress cracks, small scrapes and scratches. Internally the helmet is rather dirty and the majority of the foam rubber backing and the brow padding is now absent.  Some wear and a little damage to the edging as shown.  The satin lining is also faded and partially detached.  Retains good ear capsules.  Fitted with a standard short pigtail loom and NATO plug.  The tinted acrylic visor has only minor scratching, the cover 22c/1252896, has lost elasticity around the edges so does not stay in place easily. The 3B is considerably rarer than the later 3C.  Whilst it would benefit from a little cosmetic work this is a good complete example and makes a super display piece.  Stock code H24978.
