USAAF 9th AAF 366th FG nose art photograph

Approximately 12 x 9cm.  A good clear image of a 366th Fighter Group 'Thunderbolt'.  The nose art shows gunsight crosshairs, a bare-breasted 'angel' with bow and arrow and a fighter aircraft.  The pilot, Lt. J.R. MacRae is crouched on the wing in his A-2 jacket, B-4 lifevest, parachute harness, RAF C-type helmet, MK.VIII goggles, A-14 mask, and 1941 pattern gauntlets.  The details of his groundcrew can be read on the side of the aircraft with a lens.  Officially captioned at the bottom (from the negative) and dated 25-4-44.  A great photograph.  The 366FG of the 9th AAF, known as the 'Gunfighters' was comprised of the 389th, 390th and 391st Fighter Squadrons.  They were initially based at Membury in Dorset (10/1/44), later moving to Thruxton, Hampshire (1/3/44).  They were heavily involved in the build-up to D-Day, moving to France on 17/6/44 and acting as ground support in the Battle of the Bulge.  Stock code P24215A-201.
