RAF C-type flying helmet, early pattern - history

Stores reference 22c/451.  Size 3.  The leather is in variable condition, the right side (as worn) is very good and flexible but the left side has some surface damage, peeling and wear.  Embossed with  A Crown M and reference codes.  All 4 goggle straps are good and the press studs have most of their original coating.  Very good Bennett buckle and chinstrap complete with metal end tip.  The rubber receiver carriers are undamaged and remain quite flexible.  Very light soiling to the lining which is named to E.F. Riddell and numbered '21338'.  A quick search has revealed a little information on this airman but further research could yield more.  Flight Lieutenant E.F. Riddell of 21 EFTS was injured when the Tiger Moth (R4832) he was piloting, stalled on approach to base near Booker Aerodrome on 18th February 1942 (AIR81/12283).  The London Gazette of 6th April 1943 notes that he relinquished his rank at his own request and transferred to the General Duties Branch in the rank of Pilot Officer.  He was mentioned in dispatches in the 1946 New Year Honours list and the London Gazette of 24th July 1956 confirms him  on the 'Emergency List' of RAFVR officers as Flight Lieutenant, retaining the rank of Squadron Leader.  The helmet is sold unwired as photographed.  Good used overall.  Stock code H25181.
