WW1 WRAF motor transport driver's cap c.1918

£500.00 Approx $625.78, €582.75

Code: H25226

Women's Royal Air Force Motor Transport Driver's Cap, 1918 pattern.  Soft light tan leather 'flying-style' cap with fur-trimmed 'fold-down' edges.  Lined with chamois.  Secured under the chin or over the head with a leather strap and leather covered single pronged buckle.  Although similar to a variant of the official fur-lined flying cap, this fur-trimmed WRAF cap would offer motorcylists and drivers, in their open cab vehicles, some protection from the weather.  This example was manufactured by 'Adastra', and supplied by George H. Leavey & Co. Ltd.  Size 73/8.  The leather is in lovely supple condition as is the lining. The trim is generally good but there is some loss and loose fur, notably to the front centre.  It might be possible to 'harvest' some of the loose fur and use it to cover the worn parts but we'll leave that decision to the new owner.  With 1918 dated manufacturer's label and official 'RAF' ink stamp.  Named to a previous owner 'Jessie Green'.    An extremely rare and unusual early cap.  The RAF Museum at Hendon have an identical example in their collection - see photographs.  Stock code H25226.
