USN APH-5 flying helmet

SOLD

Code: H25067

Helmet, Flying, Pilot's Protective, Type APH-5.   No manufacturer's  label/marks or date.  Introduced into service from April 1956.  Produced using a polyester resin reinforced fibreglass shell lined with energy absorbing cellular polystyrene sheet, the most distinctive feature of this helmet is an integral neutral grey acrylic visor that retracts beneath a moulded resin reinforced fibreglass housing and can be locked into position using a large nylon knob positioned at the centre.  Leather covered foam rubber pads improve the fit and provide internal padding whilst a nylon nape strap and nylon chin strap secure the helmet.  This relatively early version has a thick natural rubber edge roll and two leather oxygen mask tabs, each with twin male press studs.  Later variants had black edge rolls and used Hardman oxygen mask retainers.  The helmet is fitted with type H-87A/U receivers, a wiring loom and rubber covered plug.  The shell of this example is in very sound condition with the original gold paint finish but there are some chips, stress cracking and paint loss.  The visor cover also has paint loss and 'ghost' marks where some stars and letters 'CO' can be seen.  It has painted 'wings' and the word 'NAVY' to the centre.  The visor is in good condition bar light scratching and wear.  The helmet lining is grubbby but complete.  Good edge roll.  Fitted with a boom microphone assembly MT-521A/U, wiring loom and 2-pin plug, PJ-292.  A great display piece.  Stock code H25067.
