RAF escape & evasion bow saw

SOLD

Code: E24145

This miniature saw 'kit' was smuggled into prisoner of war camps within parcels, games, sports equipment etc.  It is comprised of a soft steel rod approximately 12cm in length, and a short hacksaw blade.  The rod has small slots cut into each end and two small indents a couple of centimetres from each end.  The indents made the rod quite easy to bend into an wide inverted 'C' shape and the blade could then be inserted forming a miniature bow saw that would be incredibly useful for escape purposes.  The bars were also magnetized and could be used as a makeshift compass.  According to Phil Froom (book - Escape & Evasion Devices), MI9 archives suggest they were also concealed in some flying boots.  This sale is for the 'as issued' saw in its original waxed paper wrappings.  It is in excellent, unused condition with some protective grease remaining.  Please note that the 'finished' saw and map are not included and are not for sale.  An extremely rare escape and evasion item.  Stock code E24145.
