RAF Mk.3C flying helmet

SOLD

Code: H24970

Stores reference 22c/1303174.  Size large.  The Mk.3C superceded the Mk.3A/3B  type helmets and covered in one basic design, a helmet for aircrews concerned with low and high altitude (rotary and fixed wing) with or without ejector seats.  The shell was manufactured from moulded glass fibre woven cloth impregnated with polyester resin and lined with a shock absorbing layer of cork and an internal webbing cradle.  The soft padded liner is finished in light tan leather.  The helmet retains the original finish in olive drab green and a reflective tape cross.  There is some paint chipping/scratching/surface crazing and stress cracks but the shell displays quite well.  The leather liner is quite clean but the foam rubber backing on these parts is breaking down and shedding as usual.  The best course of action with this is to carefully remove the foam rubber with methylated spirit.   Retains very good gel filled ear capsules.  The helmet is wired with loom and NATO plug.  The dual side mounted visor system is comprised of two injection moulded polycarbonate visors.  The inner, clear vision offers protection against blast and bird strike debris and has an adjustable lock.  The independently positioned outer is tinted for glare protection.  Both have some scuffs and scratches but are in good overall condition and protected with a fixed velveteen cover.  A reasonably good example of this popular bonedome.  Displays well.  Stock code H24970.
