RAF 1940 pattern flying gauntlets

SOLD

Code: GA20960

Stores reference 22c/425-430.  Size large.  Rare and sought after 'chemically heated' gauntlets.  Manufactured in untreated suede/sheepskin with chromed leather on the thumbs and gussets between the fingers.  An adjustable press-studded strap runs adjacent to the cuffs.  Shearling lined with a proofed cotton pocket stitched into each glove - this used to hold a chemical 'Everhot' bag which when dampened would provide heat for up to six hours.  In practice these gloves proved to be rather bulky and chemical burns were not uncommon.  This pair is a little dirty and creased through storage but aside from a smallish split near the cuff of the right glove where the leather is thinner, they remain in very good condition.  Both gloves retain the cuff strap, each with a fading A.I.D. stamp.  One also has faint size markings, some numbers and 1941 (?) date.  The press studs have some verdigris deposits but this can be removed with care should the buyer choose to do so.  Very good linings but both internal cotton pockets have been carefully removed.  1940 pattern gauntlets are difficult to find and when they do turn up are often in very poor condition.  This is one of the better pairs we have been able to offer for some years.  Stock code GA20960.

NB. Left and right gloves were manufactured in separate factories to combat theft.  The left glove is size marked as 'Large', the right is slightly smaller but they have similar wear levels, came together and appear to have been worn as a pair.
