RAF station 'scramble' bell, c.1940

SOLD

Code: M24675

Stores reference 21C/696.  Large non ferrous bronze-nickel RAF station bell with classic 'crown' top.  This is the larger of the two sizes produced, measuring approximately 32cm/12.5" in height (not including protruding clapper when fitted) and 32cm/12.5" diameter.  Stamped 'A.T.W' with War Department broad arrow on the crown top and engraved to the side with King's crown Air Ministry marks and all important 1940 date.  This example is complete with the often missing original bi-metal clapper, the shaft of which is rather rusty as usual.  The bell is undamaged and has a good shiny 'silver' finish but also relatively minor 'dings', scratches and surface wear/pitting where it has been struck over the years.  With effort all of these bells can be cleaned and polished to a high-shine finish if required.  Contrary to popular belief each station had more than one bell and they were not used exclusively to 'scramble' aircraft, but due to various original 1940 Pathe newsreels these have become iconic symbols of the Battle of Britain and fighter pilots racing to their waiting Spitfire and Hurricane aircraft.  This is why these bells have acquired the name ‘Scramble Bells’, despite their original designed purpose.  A 'must have' for every serious collector, these are increasingly difficult to find now.  A super, impressive and very imposing display piece.  Extremely heavy at around 21kg unpacked - postage is given as a guide only and may require adjustment.   Stock code M24675.
