RAF MK.IV series goggle strap retainers

These small retainers were used in conjunction with helmet guide-plates that were riveted or sewn in place on the helmet.  Manufactured in black-painted brass in the form of an open-sided tube attached to a press stud.  One retainer was clipped over each side of the elasticated fabric loop section of goggle strap and attached via the press stud to the guide-plate on the helmet.  This helped to secure the heavy goggles to the wearer and keep them in position during use.  Although technically intended for use with the Mk.IVA goggles, it would appear that both helmet plates and these retainers were used much more widely with the Mk.IVB goggle.  They have some paint loss and are a little misshaped but are easily manipulated to the desired shape if necessary.  Often missing in boxed goggle sets and incredibly difficult to obtain separately.  Stock code G26878.
